MamaCITA artist Michelle Ciarlo-Hayes recently filmed a stop-motion video to capture, in just over two minutes, the handmade process she employs to create her salvaged wood and book paper art blocks.

Philadelphia photographer Jessica Kourkounis (kourkounis.com) sat down with Michelle in March to sketch out their ideas for the final product, and in April they shot the video at Jessica’s South Philadelphia studio, Rock Paper Scissors (rockpaperscisso.rs). After filming, Kerry Hallett of Heart Harbor Music (heartharbor.squarespace.com) wrote a lovely, original piece of music to go along with the video, and the imagery and sound were merged into one.

Michelle says the most challenging aspect of filming this project was waiting patiently while the blocks dried enough to handle, and remembering not to move anything on the table during pauses in the filming.
